The Executive Committee of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) has, for the second time, met with the Director-General of the National Service Scheme (NSS) to deepen and strengthen the collaboration between the two organizations.
Last year, the GhIS Executive Committee, led by Immediate Past President Surv. Dr. Anthony Arko Adjei, met with the then Director-General, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, to discuss the deployment of GhIS student members from recognized tertiary institutions into suitable training organizations and to explore potential areas of collaboration between GhIS and the NSS.
Ahead of the 2025/2026 deployment of NSS personnel, the GhIS Executive Committee—this time led by President Surv. Kofi Obeng Ayirebi and other members of the Governing Council—met again with the current NSS Director-General, Mr. Felix Gyamfi. The meeting aimed to reinforce GhIS’s request for the deployment of student members into survey-related training organizations, where they can apply their acquired knowledge meaningfully.
Surv. Obeng Ayirebi noted that the previous deployment of surveying students to unrelated sectors has led to some professionals abandoning the surveying profession entirely. He emphasized that a strengthened partnership with NSS would help retain these students within the profession.
In response, Mr. Felix Gyamfi affirmed the NSS’s readiness to collaborate with professional bodies in training service personnel. He encouraged private firms within such bodies to take the lead in requesting the personnel they require. This, he said, would help ensure proper placement of personnel while also generating some revenue for the scheme.
He also disclosed that the NSS aims to deploy over 50% of its personnel to the private sector this year. Companies able to take on more than five (5) service personnel may benefit from certain waivers.
Surv. Obeng Ayirebi welcomed the update and assured the Director-General that the Institution would communicate the information to its members operating private firms. He also stated that GhIS would formally request five (5) personnel—three survey students and two others to support operations at the Kumasi GhIS Office.
Mr. Felix Gyamfi expressed his appreciation to the GhIS delegation for reaching out and reaffirming their commitment to long-term collaboration.
The meeting concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to the NSS and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
